ABOUT THE WORKSHOP 5
Translating ideas into proposals, developing research skills, breaking down a script to formulate a budget, viable financial and project plans.
In between this workshop and the following one participants will be expected to complete an assignment which will require them to breakdown the script according
to subjects covered by the workshop:

  • How to break your script down into a budget & Understanding the parameters of your budget
  • Understanding new media
  • Why film insurance is vital to the survival of your production
  • Determining standard industry crew and cast rates
  • Responding to briefs
  • Understanding solicited proposal submissions (SABC & MNET)
  • Explore alterative funding (private, government nationally & internationally) and how to approach them;
  • Proposal writing.
Faclitators
David Jammy
MANAGING DIRECTOR

One of the co-founders of Curious Pictures, David Jammy is an experienced producer who has won both national and international acclaim for his work.

He is a law graduate of the University of Witwatersrand and, while studying, served as the President of the Students' Representative Council. He holds a Masters Degree in Cinema Studies
from New York University.


Harriet Gavshon
MANAGING DIRECTOR

Harriet Gavshon is a co-founder of Curious Pictures and has 20 years of experience in the industry.

After completing a Bachelor of Dramatic Arts Degree from the University of the Witwatersrand, Harriet went to New York where she completed her Masters Degree in Cinema Studies at
New York University. She has since taught at both UNISA and the University of the Witwatersrand and has served on numerous industry bodies.


Nantie Steyn
LINE PRODUCER

Nantie started B.Journ at Rhodes University, then AFS Exchange programme to Italy, attended the Liceo Artistico in Novara, Northern Italy. She soon returned from Italy, resumed B.Journ
degree at Rhodes University Graduated.

She has since worked with numerous industry bodies, and was recently, line producing a comedy on SABC 3 - "Font"- with Curious Pictures.


Lecturers
Kamscilla Naidoo
Kamscilla is Head of commission, special commission and content hub SABC.

Ursula Scherlich
Serves as a production controller and handle content enterprises at the SABC, she will elaborate on financial planning.




OVERALL COURSE DESCRIPTION:
WoS will host a series of six workshops and each workshop will span a period of two days.

The workshops offer women working in the industry an opportunity to build skills and knowledge, which will enable them to excel in their current positions and to
become producers if they attend the whole course.

During the six-month course participants will work with their own scripts/ideas (or with those provided to us through a partnership with SASWA). They will focus on
developing, editing, and marketing the scripts as well as planning of production/post production/marketing.

The course provides an opportunity for women to build their knowledge of the art of producing from producers who are experts with extensive experience in all the subjects covered in the course; to access methods and approaches they can use to effectively implement their skills; to promote discussion around the media, film and television opportunities; to create a culture of learning and continuous development as well as an appreciation for local and African film and television opportunities; to stimulate film and television production by South African women.

FOCUS AREAS OF EACH WORKSHOP:

WORSHOP 1: COORDINATOR TO PRODUCTION MANAGER - 21st & 22nd Oct 06
Incorporates skills training to elevate the PA/ Coordinator to the level of Production Manager.

WORSHOP 2: PRODUCTION MANAGER TO PRODUCER - 11th -12th Nov 06
Incorporates the development from Production Management to assuming the functions of a Producer.

WORSHOP 3: BASIC BUSINESS MANAGEMENT - STARTING, LAWS, SYSTEMS, MANAGING A COMPANY AND LEADERSHIPS SKILLS - 11TH - 12TH DEC 06
Incorporates establishing and running a production company as well as performing the function of a Producer.

WORSHOP 4: THE SOUTH AFRICAN STORY - 31ST MARCH - 01 APRIL 07
Incorporates storytelling using oral tradition, myth, book adaptation etc. The relationship between writer and producer.

WORSHOP 5: PROPOSAL WRITING AND FINANCIAL PLANNING (PUTTING IDEAS ON PAPER)- 5TH - 6TH MAY 07
Incorporates translating ideas into proposals, developing research skills, breaking down a script to formulate a budget, viable financial and project plans.

WORSHOP 6: MARKETING AND CO PRODUCTIONS- 23RD - 24TH JUNE 07
this will incorperate How to work the local and international market - selling your product and co production.
OVERALL COURSE OBJECTIVES:
  • To empower women to excel in their current situations and also to break the glass ceiling and progress to the highest levels in the film industry.
  • To enable women to become producers and create the foundation for establishing their own production companies.
  • WHO SHOULD ATTEND THE COURSE?
    The workshops are for women already working in the film, television or video industry, who want to progress to producing. These women typically are:

  • working as production assistants, production coordinators and production managers;
  • planning to diversify from other functions within the industry into producing i.e. writers, directors, editors etc. who want to become producers;
  • working as producers and want to further develop their skills, knowledge and ability e.g. developing a budget from a script, responding to briefs, marketing, fundraising etc.
  • PARTICIPANT FEES:
    Individual workshop costs - for an individual two-day workshop, the cost is as follows:

  • WoS members - R200
  • Non-WoS members - R800


  • The registration fees include lunch and refreshments, materials as well as e-mail and telephone support on the specific workshop subject for one month.
