Arterial Network and the DOEN Foundation Mobile Phone Film Competition

The Arterial Network and the DOEN Foundation call for submissions of short films shot on cell phones for its first Mobile Phone Film Competition. The films will be evaluated by experts in various fields. Public awareness and participation will be increased by on-line voting. So, anyone with a cell phone will now be able to become a filmmaker in the Arterial Network/DOEN Foundation Mobile Phone Film Competition. The festival aims at providing an opportunity to anyone to create and capture images to tell a unique story using mobile phones, the most accessible technology on the African continent.

Prizes for winners are as follows:
First Prize: 1000 Euros
Second Prize: 500 Euros
Third Prize: 250 Euros
Audience Choice Award: 150 Euros

Other prizes such as filmmaking training opportunities and screenings at film festivals for the winners are currently being negotiated.

Women /making Waves at the Dirban International film Festival 2011 (DIFF)

DIFF was indeed special this year as for the first time in 32 years the Opening film was directed by a South African woman; ‘Othello Burning by Sarah Blatcher. It very well maybe the first Film by a women period!

With this is Feature film debute had put Sarah on  the list as the 6th women to direct a feature film in South Africa.

 

The 'Best Pitch' at the Durban FilmMart went to Noxy Mavundla
This was all quite overwhelming and exciting for Noxy as it was her first time to attend and participate at a film festival /market and she picked up a best pitch prize to go to Rotterdam in January!! But also, the project she pitched ‘This Boy’ of which she is co-executive producer with her mentor David Max Brown won the over all grand prize ‘Best project R75,000 grant towards distribution and a distribution contract with Videovision to distribute the film in south Africa! Well this is certainly one of many festival and markets to come Noxy and we hope it’s one of many awards to come too! Well-done Gal!! 
 

Best South African Documentary at DIFF – ‘Dear Mandela’ (South Africa/USA)
The film follows Mnikelo, Mazwi and Zama as they take their case to the highest court in the country try to oppose the government imposed eviction plan for shack dwellers.
Dara Kell - Co-Director / Producer -is a South African filmmaker and editor, and is the recipient of Participant Media’s ‘Outstanding Filmmaker’ award, representing Africa. Her editing credits include 'The Reckoning', which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2009 the Academy Award-nominated 'Jesus Camp', 'Courting Justice' and 'Mercurial Son: The Blues of Lurrie Bell'.  More...

Ann Peacock, Emmy Award winning scriptwriter, born and raised in South Africa former University of Cape Town Studet. Ann immigrated with her family to Los Angeles where she became a screenwriter with blockbuster hit THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: IN MY COUNTRY, THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE, NIGHTS IN RODANTHE and KIT KITTREDGE: AN AMERICAN GIRL – Read inver view 

Moonyeenn Lee (Casting Director) She has practiced as an agent for the past thirty four years - heading up the largest and most successful talent agency in South Africa, MLA. 

Helena Spring (Executive Producer) was the worldwide Head of Production of Videovision Entertainment and has produced over sixty television projects and over twenty feature films. Her most recent motion picture credits as producer include JOZI, MR BONES 2, and Darrell James Roodt’s PREY. Helena has now left Videovision to start her own procuction company this year.

Interview JIHAN EL-TAHRI - Woman on top of her game

Jihan El-Tahri is a producer/director who has been working in the television industry for over 20 years. She has directed and produced acclaimed feature documentaries for various broadcasters around the world, including: Behind the Rainbow, House of Saud and Cuba’s African Odyssey. 
El-Tahri says that the key to making great films is being able to work with people from all over the world. “I have worked with the BBC, ARTE, American broadcasters and various funding organizations like the European Media Fund. It is critical in this day and age to be able to obtain financing from various sources.”


Congratulations to Claire Angelique on being the first female recipient of the Standard Bank Young Artist Award for film.

Durban’s youngest and most prolific film maker, starts shooting her new feature film early March 2010, called PALACE OF BONE.

Inspired after winning the prestigious Standard Bank Young Artist of The Year 2010 for her first feature film 'My Black Little Heart' tha WoS screened in 2008. Angelique has set herself a challenge to write and direct yet another film exposing and focusing on Durban’s sub culture, to debut at this years NATIONAL ARTS FESTIVAL in Grahamstown.  More...

 


 

Women flock to mobile web
