COURSE - themed 'Breaking The Glass Ceiling'
OVERALL COURSE DESCRIPTION:
WoS will host a series of six workshops from October 2006 to February 2007, and each workshop will span a period of two days.
The workshops offer women working in the industry an opportunity to build skills and knowledge, which will enable them to excel in their current positions and to become producers if they attend the whole course.
During the six-month course participants will work with their own scripts (or with those provided to us through a partnership with SASWA). They will focus on developing, editing, and marketing the scripts as well as planning of production/post production/marketing.
The course provides an opportunity for women to build their knowledge of the art of producing; to access methods and approaches they can use to effectively implement their skills; to promote discussion around the media, film and television opportunities; to create a culture of learning and continuous development as well as an appreciation for local and African film and television opportunities; to stimulate film and television production by South African women.
PROBLEM STATEMENT:
In order for film to become a viable business and thus to playa key role in the economy of a country it needs to be driven by producers as the key managers of filmed product. Prodducers need to be abble to identify good and appropreate product, identify the market fot that product, finacially pachage it as well as identify th creative team tiattach the the prifect, and manage the entire creative process. These independent prpduceers need aso to know how to establish and sustain a production company as a viable small media\um or micro etrpise.
The following indicates focus areas of each workshop:
WORSHOP 1: COORDINATOR TO PRODUCTION MANAGER - 21st & 22nd October
Incorporates skills training to elevate the PA/ Coordinator to the level of Production Manager.
WORSHOP 2: PRODUCTION MANAGER TO PRODUCER - 9th -10th Nov 06
Incorporates the development from Production Management to assuming the functions of a Producer
WORSHOP 3: BASIC BUSINESS MANAGEMENT - STARTING, LAWS, SYSTEMS, MANAGING A COMPANY AND LEADERSHIPS SKILLS - 9TH - 10TH DEC 06
Incorporates establishing and running a production company as well as performing the function of a Producer
WORSHOP 4: THE SOUTH AFRICAN STORY - 13TH 14TH JAN 07
Incorporates storytelling using oral tradition, myth, book adaptation etc. The relationship between writer and producer
WORSHOP 5: PROPOSAL WRITING AND FINANCIAL PLANNING - 10TH - 11TH FEB 07
Incorporates translating ideas into proposals, developing research skills, breaking down a script to formulate a budget, viable financial and project plans
WORSHOP 6: MARKETING AND CO PRODUCTIONS- 24TH - 25TH MAR 07
This will incorperate How to work the local and international market - selling your product and co production
OVERALL COURSE OBJECTIVES:
  • To empower women to excel in their current situations and also to break the glass ceiling and progress to the highest levels in the film industry.
  • To enable women to become producers and create the foundation for establishing their own production companies.
  • To develop a generation of professional women producers of film and television in South Africa - to boost their projects, refine their business strategies.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND THE COURSE?
The workshops are for women already working in the film, television or video industry, who want to progress to producing. These women typically are:
  • working as production assistants, production coordinators, production managers and assistant producers;
  • planning to diversify from other functions within the industry into producing i.e. writers, directors, editors etc. who want to become producers;
  • Independent film and television producers and who wish to increase their knowledge and ability as producers and their presence in the national and international marketplace. e.g. breaking down a script to a budget, responding to briefs, marketing, fundraising including co-production etc.
TRAINERS:
Throughout the series a large pool of appropriate trainers nationally and internationally will be targeted. All trainers/experts are active producers, script editors etc. the workshops will be conducted in collaboration with relevant, organisations such as SASWA, representatives from Broadcasters, SARS, DTI, Banking institutions etc. The first workshop From Coordinator to Production Manager will be presented and facilitated by Amour Elliott-Setter who runs a successful course through the "The Excellence Factory".
PARTICIPANT FEES:
Overall course costs - Payment upfront for the entire course over the six months,
  • WoS members - R2,000
  • Non Members - R4,800
Individual workshop costs - for an individual two-day workshop, the cost is as follows:
  • WoS members - R200
  • Non-WoS members - R1000
The registration fees include lunch and refreshments, materials as well as e-mail and telephone support on the specific workshop subject for one month.
